Date Generator

How the date generator works

The hardest part of date night is usually not the date. It is the ten minutes beforehand where you both say "I don't mind, what do you want to do?" until one of you suggests the same restaurant as last time. The date generator skips that part.

  1. Set your filters. Choose whether you want to stay in or go out, your budget, whether you are feeling cozy or active, and the season. The first time you visit, the generator picks the current season for you.
  2. Spin. The wheel has eight slices, and each one is a real idea that fits your filters, shown as a small icon. When it stops, the slice under the pointer is the idea you get, so the wheel never lands on one thing and shows you another. On a computer, you can hover over a slice to see which idea it holds.
  3. Keep it or spin again. Every idea comes with a short description of how to actually do it. If it doesn't grab you, spin again. You will not get the same idea twice in a row.

Behind the wheel there are 120 date ideas, each tagged by where it happens, what it costs in general terms, how much energy it takes and which seasons it suits. Under the wheel you can see how many ideas match your current filters, so if you have filtered down to a handful, you know to loosen one.

The filters, explained

FilterOptionsWhat it means
WhereEither, stay in, go outWhether you leave the house. A few ideas that happen just outside the door, like camping in the backyard or stargazing on the back step, count as going out.
BudgetAny, free, low-cost, treat yourselvesFree means genuinely free. Low-cost means a small spend, like a snack, a ticket or ingredients. Treat yourselves is for special occasions, and every one of those ideas happens out of the house.
EnergyEither, cozy, activeCozy dates are about relaxing together. Active dates involve moving, making or exploring.
SeasonAny, spring, summer, fall, winterHides ideas that do not suit the weather, like a beach day in December. Ideas that work all year round always stay on the wheel.

Your filters are remembered on this device, so next time you open the page it is set up the way you like it.

Saving and sharing ideas

When you land on an idea you both like, tap Save this date. Saved ideas build up into a list you can come back to, which is a great way to build a date night backlog on a free evening, so you are never stuck on a busy one. Once you have saved something, a small "saved" link appears under the wheel. Tap it to see your list, with each idea and its short description. From there you can Copy list (it copies the idea names, one per line), Clear list to start fresh, or go back to the wheel.

You can also tap Send to my partner to share an idea. On most phones this opens your usual share menu so you can send it in a message. On devices without a share menu, it copies the idea and a link to the page so you can paste it wherever you like. Either way, it is a lovely low-pressure way to suggest a plan, or to drop a hint.

Ways to use it

  • The decision maker. Agree in advance that whatever the wheel lands on first, you do. No re-spins. It makes the whole evening feel like a small adventure.
  • Turns. Alternate who sets the filters each week, so both of you get your kind of date.
  • Date jar, digitally. Save ten ideas on a slow Sunday, then pick one from your saved list whenever you need it.
  • Budget weeks. Set the budget to free and challenge yourselves to have the best possible date without spending anything.
  • Anniversary planning. Set the budget to "treat yourselves" and use the wheel for inspiration, then plan the details together.

What makes a good date, anyway?

Relationship researchers have found that couples who regularly do new and exciting activities together tend to report higher satisfaction than couples who stick to pleasant but familiar routines. A well-known study by psychologist Arthur Aron and colleagues found that couples who spent time on novel, active activities felt more satisfied with their relationships than couples who spent the same time on familiar, pleasant ones.

That does not mean every date needs to be skydiving. It means novelty matters. Cooking a dish you have never tried counts. So does walking a route you have never taken, or playing a game you have never played. It is one reason the generator mixes the familiar, like movie nights, with the slightly unexpected, like painting each other's portraits.

The other ingredient is attention. The best dates are the ones where you are actually present with each other, which is why so many of the ideas suggest leaving the phones somewhere else.

A few tips for making any idea better

  • Put it in the calendar. A date that is "sometime this weekend" usually turns into no date at all.
  • Dress up a little. Even for a night in. It signals that this is not just another evening.
  • Add one small surprise. A favorite snack, a note, a song you know they love.
  • Talk about something other than logistics. Our couples questions game is made for exactly this.

What each filter leaves you with

It helps to know roughly how the 120 ideas are spread out, so you can tell at a glance why the count under the wheel drops when you tap a filter. The numbers below are for each choice on its own, with every other filter, including the season, set to any or either.

Filter choiceIdeas that matchGood to know
Stay in43Plenty of variety, from cooking and games to letters and projects around the house.
Go out77The biggest group, covering everything from a walk around a lake to a night in a hotel.
Free42About a third of the collection. Pair it with "stay in" for 21 ideas you can do tonight without leaving home.
Low-cost64The largest budget group. Most need a snack, a ticket or a few ingredients.
Treat yourselves14Every one of these is a going-out idea, so pair it with "go out" or "either".
Cozy71Relaxed ideas where talking and being close matter more than doing.
Active49Ideas that get you moving, making something or exploring.

When fewer than eight ideas match, the wheel still has eight slices, so you will see the same icons repeat around it. That is not a mistake. It just means your filters are tight, and loosening one will bring more variety back onto the wheel.

Plan around the idea you get

An idea is only half a date. The other half is the small bit of planning that turns "we should do that" into an evening you actually enjoy. This simple checklist works for almost anything the wheel gives you.

Before

  • Pick a day and time right away. Do it while the idea is still exciting, not later.
  • Check one practical thing. Opening hours, the weather, whether you need to book, or whether you have the ingredients.
  • Decide who does what. One of you handles the food, the other handles the music, the blanket or the tickets.
  • Have a backup. If it is an outdoor idea, spin once more with "stay in" selected and keep that idea in your pocket in case it rains.

During

  • Put the phones away. Take one photo if you want to, then put them in a drawer or a bag.
  • Let it be a little bit silly. Most ideas in the collection are more fun when nobody is trying to be good at them.
  • Ask one real question. Something you would not ask over a quick dinner, like what they are looking forward to this year, or what has been on their mind lately.

After

  • Give it a score. Out of ten, just for fun. It gives you both a quick way to say what worked.
  • Say your favorite moment. Each of you names one. It takes thirty seconds and it makes the memory stick.
  • Choose the next one. Spin the wheel before you go to bed, or pick from your saved list, so the next date is already waiting.

Make a date jar or a monthly rotation

The saved list is the quiet hero of the date generator. A few minutes of spinning on a slow evening can set you up for weeks of dates, and there are a few easy ways to use it.

A paper date jar

Spin with a few different filter settings and save the ideas you both like. Open your saved list, tap Copy list, and paste it somewhere you can print it or copy it out by hand. Cut the names into strips, fold them, and drop them into a jar. When date night comes around, one of you pulls out a strip, no arguing allowed. If you want a little more control, keep two jars, one for free ideas and one for the bigger ones, and only reach into the second jar on special occasions.

A monthly rotation

If you like a bit more structure, build a small plan for the month. A pattern that works well is four slots:

  1. Week one: a stay-in date. Filter to stay in and cozy.
  2. Week two: something active. Filter to active, with either location.
  3. Week three: a free date. Filter to free and see what comes up.
  4. Week four: the wild card. Set every filter to any or either and take whatever the wheel gives you.

Spin for each slot, save the winners, then copy the list into a shared note or your calendar. At the end of the month, clear the list and start again. Because the generator picks the season from the time of year on your first visit, remember to update the season filter as the weather turns, and your rotation will naturally change with it.

Take turns planning

When one person always plans, date night slowly becomes their job, and jobs are not romantic. Taking turns keeps things balanced and means each of you gets to surprise the other now and then.

  • The planner sets the filters. Whoever's turn it is chooses the settings and spins. The other person just shows up.
  • Keep the idea a secret until the day. Tell your partner only what to wear and when to be ready. A small mystery makes even a simple idea feel bigger.
  • Split one evening in two. Each of you spins once and plans half the night, then you reveal your halves in turn.
  • Allow one veto. One veto per turn keeps it fair without turning the wheel into a debate.

How to make a stay-in date feel special

The biggest risk with a night in is that it looks exactly like every other night in. The idea from the wheel is the starting point. These small touches are what make it feel like a date rather than just another evening at home.

  • Change the room. Move the furniture, eat on the floor, or set the table in a room you do not usually eat in. A different setting tells you both that tonight is different.
  • Change the light. Turn off the overhead lights and use lamps, candles or a string of lights instead.
  • Pick a start time. "Date starts at eight" works better than drifting into it after the dishes.
  • Clear away the day. Ten minutes of tidying the space you will use, with laundry and work bags out of sight, makes a real difference.
  • Plan an ending. Decide how the evening finishes, whether that is dessert, a slow dance in the kitchen or a short walk around the block.

Date ideas for busy parents

When you have kids at home, the challenge is rarely ideas. It is time and energy. The filters can help you find dates that fit around bedtime.

  • Use "stay in" and "cozy" for weeknights. These are the ideas you can start after the kids are asleep, without a sitter and without much cleanup.
  • Save a few "go out" ideas for when you have help. When a grandparent or friend offers an evening, you will not waste the first hour deciding what to do.
  • Prep in the afternoon. If the idea involves food or a craft, set everything out earlier in the day so the date can begin the minute the house is quiet.
  • Try a family version first. Some ideas, like baking, a living room picnic or a blanket fort, can happen with the kids at dinnertime, then again later as a grown-up version with the lights low.
  • Keep it short and real. A focused hour counts. A short date every week beats a perfect one you never get around to.

Long-distance versions

Many of the stay-in ideas work across the miles with a video call and a little coordination. Set the filter to "stay in" and look for ideas you can both do in your own homes at the same time.

  • Cook the same meal. Agree on a recipe, shop for it separately, and cook and eat together on camera.
  • Watch in sync. Movie nights, documentaries and series marathons work well if you press play at the same moment.
  • Make something and reveal it. Portraits, playlists, bucket lists and letters are all fun to make apart and share at the end of the call.
  • Send the idea ahead. Use Send to my partner a few days before, so you both have time to get ready.

If you want something to read to each other during the call, the love letter maker can help you write a short letter to share on screen.

Frequently asked questions

How many date ideas are there?

120, covering stay-at-home dates, going-out dates, free dates, seasonal dates and special-occasion ideas.

Why does the wheel say no ideas match?

Your combination of filters is too narrow. The most common one is "stay in" with "treat yourselves": every treat-yourselves idea happens out of the house, so that pair will always come up empty. Set one filter back to "any" or "either" and spin again.

Does it show prices?

No. Costs vary so much from place to place that a number would be wrong for most people, so each idea is described as free, low-cost or a treat.

Is my saved list private?

Yes. It is stored only in your browser on this device and is never sent to us.

Can the wheel give me the same idea twice?

Not twice in a row. Each spin skips the idea you just saw. An idea can come back on a later spin, especially if your filters only match a few ideas.

Why do I see the same icon on more than one slice?

The wheel always has eight slices. When fewer than eight ideas match your filters, some of them appear more than once. Loosen a filter to fill the wheel with different ideas.

Does the idea I get really come from the slice the wheel stops on?

Yes. Every slice is a real idea that matches your filters, and the wheel turns so that the slice holding your idea stops under the pointer.

Why is the season already picked when I open the page?

The first time you visit, the generator sets the season from today's date. After that, it remembers whatever filters you last chose on this device. You can change the season, or set it to any, at any time.

Can I turn off the spinning animation?

If your device is set to reduce motion, the wheel skips the spin and shows your idea straight away.
